A family email domain is the part after the @ in your address. With a domain you own, you can use addresses such as [email protected] and [email protected]. Each person signs in to their own mailbox.
Use [email protected] for messages you want to receive together. Choose which family members get a copy. These addresses are examples; you choose your own domain.
You can also share household mail without a domain. Free Family includes a shared address such as [email protected], as shown here.

Joining a family does not give other members access to your personal mail. Each person signs in to a separate encrypted mailbox.

Can we keep our family domain?
Yes. Paid Family plans host email on a domain you own. Domain registration remains separate. You need access to its DNS settings to connect it.

Custom domains require a paid Family plan. Free Family uses @thelemail.com and includes up to six private mailboxes, 1 GB each and one shared family alias. It costs €0, has no expiry date and needs no payment method.
How does the shared family email address work?
An email sent to your shared alias reaches the family members you select. Each person receives a copy in their own mailbox. Reading or deleting one person’s copy does not manage everyone else’s copy. The alias does not have its own mailbox or login.
Can other family members read my personal mail?
Joining a family does not give other members access to your personal inbox. Each person has their own login.
How many people can join?
Up to six people, including the organizer, on every Family plan. You can use the plan with fewer people; the household price stays the same.
Can I invite someone using Gmail or another provider?
They need their own Thelemail account to join your family. You can still send and receive ordinary email with people using other providers.
Can we use Apple Mail or Thunderbird?
Use the Thelemail web app or macOS app. Standard IMAP/SMTP access for Apple Mail, Thunderbird and similar clients is not currently available.
What do the paid Family plans include?
Family includes up to six mailboxes with 10 GB each and two custom domains for €60 a year or €6.50 monthly. Family Plus has 30 GB each and four domains for €96 a year or €10 monthly. Both include unlimited aliases, subject to anti-abuse limits. Domain registration is separate.
Can children have their own accounts?
Account holders must be at least 16 under our Terms. Parents can use the shared address to receive school messages in their own mailboxes.
What is encrypted?
Stored mail uses zero-access encryption. Messages between Thelemail accounts are end-to-end encrypted. Mail exchanged with other providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted in every case.

With a custom domain, you control the address and can connect the domain to another email host. Mail history needs a separate transfer. An @thelemail.com address stays with Thelemail.
